To prepare fiber for carding or combing, you need to tease it.
Here I'm using a flat teasing carder clamped to my table, and a flicking tool (flicker) in my hand.
First I carefully stretch the locks onto the carder, making sure I'm dragging them along the teeth the long way - the same direction as the fiber, so I won't make snarls.
Then I take the teasing tool, and gently "flick" the top level of the fibers to separate them. Note that I am not combing them out, nor am I dragging the teeth of the carder and flicker together - it is more of a gentle "popping" motion, which will make the fibers separate and fluff up loosely.
Now we're ready to use the drum carder!
