
Some spindles have a top that has a center-draft notch instead of a hook. To use a spindle like the one shown below, you will need to spiral the yarn up the shaft of the spindle, and then through the notch. If you have problems with the leader slipping out of your notch, you can do one additional rotation at the top, beneath the "ledge" of the notch, for added security.
I hook on to this type of spindle by winding backwards to spiral up the shaft, so that when I've spun the spindle and am ready to wind on my newly-spun yarn, I can keep going in the same direction as the spin, for convenience.
