Making A Half-Hitch

If you have a drop spindle without a hook, you will need to make a half-hitch to secure the leader to the spindle for spinning.

If your spindle's shaft extends beneath the whorl, take the leader beneath the whorl and halfway around that shaft. (If the shaft does not, simply wind the leader a few times around the shaft above the whorl.)

Then make a loop with your leader, and tighten this loop around the top of the shaft. If there is a notch etched in the shaft, tighten the loop at this point. If not, as on the spindle in the video, just make the half-hitch about an inch from the top of the spindle.

You're ready to give it a spin!
