Checking A Yarn's Twist

How do you know whether you're spinning too tight or too loose? You check your twist!

Hold your spindle and spun yarn in one hand, and pinch your fiber source in your other hand. Release the tension on the spun yarn in between them. See how it curls back on itself in a spiral? The thickness of that "plied" yarn is going to be very near what your finished, plied yarn will look like. Is it too poofy? Too skinny? Now is the time, when spinning your singles, to make adjustments so your final, plied yarn will look the way you like.

Remember to spin just a tiny bit tighter than this test indicates, because some of that twist will, of course, come out of your singles when it is plied, backwards, with another singles to make an evenly-plied yarn.

When you're ready to spin again, gently tug the twist apart, and wind the spun yarn onto your spindle's shaft.
