Wraps Per Inch
Substituting Your Handspun for Commercial Yarn

This page sponsored by:

The easiest way to figure out how your handspun yarn is sized compared to commercially made yarn is to figure out the Wraps Per Inch (WPI) of your finished handspun. Finding the wpi is very easy. Just get a ruler and wrap your yarn around it, laying each new wrap gently next to the other. You don't want the yarn all smooshy or spaced too far apart.

Now once you have the wraps done, count how many side by side strands fit in the space of an inch. You have now figured your wpi.

18 or more wpi - lace weight
16 wpi - fingering weight
14 wpi - sport weight
12 wpi - worsted weight
10 wpi - bulky
8 or less wpi - very bulky

Another way of comparing your handspun to commercial yarn weights is to look at the yards per pound of yarn. I consider this method less accurate because it does not take into account various fiber weights or how loose/dense your handspun yarn is. This is a general guideline for yards per pound.

2600+ yds/Lb - lace weight
1900- 2400 yds/Lb - fingering weight
1200- 1800 yds/Lb - sport weight
900 - 1200 yds/Lb - worsted weight
600- 800 yds/Lb - bulky weight
400- 500 yds/Lb - very bulky
